As a student pilot I once made the profound error of taking off IFR with "30% chance of thunderstorms" in the forecast.
About 30 minutes out of MDW, over Lake Michigan, the lightning began. I lowered the plexiglass sun visors, turned the instrument lights up full bright, tuned the ADF to an off-station and flipped on the pitot heat.
After my first diversion to the north the cabin began to get uncomfortably warm. After requesting a block of altitudes between 7000 and 5000, a full sweat broke out.
Put your trust in Lycoming and your faith in our creator. There are NO Atheists in foxholes, nor was much agnosticism present in the cockpit of that Cherokee 180 that day.
Another maxim: "It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground."
