If, when moving, I discover an item which was never unpacked from the last move, I discard it.

Moving is hell. Pure and simple. I'm Navy, so I get the move routine pretty often. You learn a lot of tricks of the trade, just random stuff to make the thing go more smoothly. Even a well-executed move is a thing of great pain.
