Good points, Dan. And ther's another parallel here:

We're fighting for the 'hearts and minds' of the people. In most cases, we have no visual means of discerning where their sympathies lie, so we have no choice but to kill all 'possible threats' including Italian diplomats, journalists, innocent Iraqis, etc. Hell, we even had a 'fragging' incident.

But when all is said and done, we'll be gone and what will happen will no doubt appal and disappoint us.
