Ditto on that.
I'm glad my parents had a chance to punish me first, because:
1) I was given a chance to learn from my mistakes.
2) I learned to fear my parents more than the cops.
Childhood is about being allowed to make mistakes and learn from them without adult consequences. That's why we have this concept of the age of 18 being significant. You get certain rights, but you also have to deal with much more serious consequences.
