Seems to me that it might work well for you as a commuter, especially if you are good with a wrench but I'm not sure I'd want my daughter doing a lot of driving with the car, just because of it's age and the potential for problems. It might be fine but there are so many things that can come up with a car like that, I'd be a bit concerned to have her drive it, especially away from home.
Is it an automatic? Be sure the transmission is in good shape if so, check all the driveline items, down to the CV's, brakes etc.
Make sure the engine leakdown/compression is good.
Then, there's always the price. Some cars are just to good to turn down based on price.
