In lawn and garden products, a good product is hard to find and initially expensive. Taking a few hours a year and caring for your equipment will repay you many times over and you won't have to keep spending $1000 every two years to buy junk.
That being said, Simplicity is one of, if not the last tractor manufacturer that sells dealer-only. I have a Simplicity that's 40 years old, and I can get many mechanical parts for it. It's worth buying from and supporting an (all-American!) company that stands by their products and doesn't hawk the newest tractor when a few simple parts could fix your old one.
