It's _possible_ that the amplifier is losing effectiveness with age, but that's pretty far out there. The antenna itself is nothing more or less than a wire filament running between the two layers of glass, it really can't wear out.
The best explanation is that it is early technology. The 944 was among the first cars to use this system and I'm not surprised that it works a little less well than a traditional antenna.
