You will find this point debatable. But, it seems to me that at present, our gov't is saying that this is indeed our job. I agree with the idea, if not the execution.
I think you are looking at the problem a bit one-sidedly; from your own perspective only.
Looked at one way: Sure, they should be glad to have us there and they'll be happy now that they can do what they want. We've brought them a great benefit and it's cost us treasure and blood.
Looked at another way: We never asked them to come, but they did. Crusader b!tches. Nothing works since they got here and now they won't get out! Will there be a civil war? Glad I'm a Shi'ite!
Some locally diverted shipments to particular army units on station might not go amiss

(provided care was maintained), but mass shipments to the US would be right out.
