the perfect 100yr storm hit from the Gulf. If my perfect storm hits there won't even be real estate to return to.
During evacuations I have access to a newer local gov't bldg that was built to enable a 20ft surge so I ain't ever leaving.
I also deal with a 100&75yr wave that happens without a storm. Almost no warning.. wham bang it's over. Oh yeah, the 75yr storm breaks on my roof. I literally live on a sandbar. I've lived here since day one. I religiously feel that if the ocean wanted me it has sure fooled me. I'm at the religious point that when the last moments of life are around because of the ocean I'm relaxed. If it wanted me it sure hasn't shown it. "don't try so hard to make sense of it"
Otherwise.. this event may influence state social and economic policies for the next 50yrs. If you go to war you know your people will suffer some death. When you model a city+ who becomes expendable and at what costs is an issue sometimes. Is the group worth spending $10-50b on preventing a disaster of death? How much does loseing 25% of the population cost? How much state taxes does the population want to pay?
I think an issue of federal $ somehow supporting dangerous areas will be an early issue? Right now a house can be built a stone's throw from high tide, on a sandbar, and next to a serious inlet around here because everyone knows the fed will give out new Fed backed Flood Insurance policies. If it's a 2nd home you already know that every 10-40yrs you'll have a completely new house.
how about federalism. is the gov't going to mandate? and maybe the state taxpayer doesn't want to pay for the protection? For sure Fed energy policy will have a new wedge to support an issue.
I think Refinery Locations is maybe #1 on the hit parade? It's like the state politicans support holding up licences because it gets them reelected by the "not in my backyard" voters. It's like getting papers to build a nuke plant.. not to get started about other stupid fed eco energy policy because it gets those belt way pols erelected getting greenie support.
It's not like the gov't is putting the enery sector out of business by not supporting them more? It's like the energy sector gets big bucks and the pol get reelected.. party hearty.
