Because they are willing to pay more for gas, like it or not eventually they will.

OK, I get that people are willing to pay more for gas thing, but the paragraph re:taxes you say both not tax to reduce consumption, and tax just to the point of reducing consumption (which seems like just semantics), and then ...the tie-in to the military in the ME. Sorry if I'm being too concrete here, but I'm not seeing the association.
