I think the author is correct in the sense that the people who remained are largely un-umpowered people.

I also think that welfare clearly erodes a persons sense of personal responsibility.

But to lay blame at the feet of welfare for what happend it zeroing in on a small part of a larger issue. Merely taking away welfare would not suddenly empower individuals and send them out into the world as productive citizens. In conjunction with this, you need to provide people with realistic economic opportunitys for them to succeed. A mother with 4 kids is not going to be able to support them working in fast food restuarants.

The author has an agenda. We all do, and thats fine. And I think its healthy to point out the role apathy and poverty played in the disaster. But his attack on welfare is a contrivance.

EDIT: I did not see anything racist about the article.
