Perhaps you are fooled by caricatures of left-thinkers, like we hear from Fint et. al. In statistics it is common to throw out the "outliers" before doing calculations. In reality, most of us want pretty much the same things, and our differences are about the details of achieving those things. John McCain strikes me as an independent and circumspect thinker. Much like liberals are. I don't need a President who thinks and acts just like me. I need one who makes good, insightful judgements after thorough consideration. I think McCain would be a HUGE improvement over you-know-who. And I probably think Powell would be even better. But I also think our next President will be a (D). Even if the Dem party continues to seem clueless.
But yeah, I'd be fine with Powell as Pres. The more important goal to me is to return Congress to (D) power. So that things can get done.
And I'd like to see a constitutional amendment requiring Congress to restrict the content of a bill to its title. No more adding pork into any ol' bill that comes by.
Regardless of what happens in '08, the White House will be occupied by a more competent leader. Forest Gump could outperform the current guy.
