downside... If law enforcement knows there is a system (any system) in place, they can remove/supeona the data, in case of severe accident.

They have had this system for years in Europe on trucks. They have a paper disk that is on every frigging truck. Shows your speed, time off duty and so on. If you are caught without one its a loss of license situation and you cannot run two disks at once...
