Take a look at:
http://www.914fan.net/djet.html . This will tell you most of what there is to know about the FI system on your car.
Do you know if you're getting any fuel? A fuel pressure gauge would be a good thing. The ~1.5 second "buzz" of the fuel pump running when the key goes from "off" to "on" is also a good diagnostic tool. Listen for it.
