It is really interesting to watch the slant the different media sources will give to a story.

I can imagine what sort of story the Washington Post would have written if the Police or National Guard had gone in and established order -- no doubt they would have had to shoot a few people. I can imagine the complaints about that!

The soldiers and police were in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" position -- at least in certain media's portrayal of them.
