Used to have a rental on the beach in Ventura, and every other year, I'd have to go and buy a bunch of batteries for the smoke detectors, which the tenant would disconnect when the batteries got low and started beeping. And he had two little kids as well. I finally bought the 10 lithium battery detectors. The guy was paying me over 2 grand/mo and couldn't buy batteries for the smoke detector, or even bother to call me.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends changing your detector batteries every year when you set your clocks back in the Fall. I do, every year.
