The chassis is indeed generic for all countries and will show ZZZ in the trunk floor area for the "middle" characters ( at least for the air-cooled versions...examples being SC's and 3.2 Carreras).
The door jamb sticker and the driver's windshield post should show the "correct" middle numbers for country-specific ( USA) cars.
