Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I used a 4" grinder with a course wire wheel. Works real well. The undercoating really goes flying. Yes, I removed the piece missing. I used a sawzall to remove most of it, then drilled out all of the spot welds and very slowly removed the pan. I butt welded my joint toward the back. Why? I don't know, but it turned out well.
