Depending on the type of ammo, 9mm can have a soft-tissue penetration of 8" to 13"! It's a small, high velocity slug. It is a deadly handgun in part because the high velocity produces secondary projectiles (after high speed penetration, bone fragments spread through adjacent tissues causing more damage). Also, 9mm rounds have been known to pass through a soft target and find another one. .40 and .45 caliber are bigger and slower, the stop and drop type.
I have never and don't ever intend to shoot anyone, so I love my 9mm for target practice. I like the way it fits my hand and the 15 round clip is great. If I was in the market for a self-defense weapon, I'd likely choose a .40.
