The catcher cannot see the umpire and is not expected to know when he has used a hand gesture to signal a strike. The umpire
never records an out with a hand gesture. Never. An out is only recorded verbally by the umpire. In this case, the catcher thought he caught the ball cleanly (and he probably did), but he
never heard the umpire record the out. Bad call? Yes. But the fact that the runner made it safely to first is the fault of the catcher and no one else.
