I do not think they will find Earth. I one of the DVD extras they asked Edward James Olmos when Galactica would find earth.
He said "Never....I hope."...because if they do, naturally, the series is over.
As to the logic of why they are running to earth...well, they are running from the bad guys...and it is the only place they know of to run to. Not many other options out there.
