About the time the government stepped in and started telling people how to live their lives. Once the bulk of the masses got used to suckling at the government teat, it is hard to let go I guess.

Granted some people really do need the assistance, but coming to expect it in lieu of personal responsibility is just wrong.

We've become a society that is, overall, lazy. Nothing is anyone's fault anymore. "it wasn't me, it was the booze, drugs, etc" "It's not my fault, I had a bad childhood".

You've all heard the stories..

Hell, we are so lazy, we turn a blind eye to illegal immigration because they will do the jobs that need to be done, but nobody wants to do. Even the conservatives trot this out from time to time as justification.

Hell, 65% of my neighborhood doesn't even cut their own grass.

For some interesting reading, you can draw some chilling parallels from "The rise and fall of the roman empire" Everything has become too easy, and we have become too soft.

For the last two generations, we have preached to our kids to go to college. Now we have a ton of college graduates, with limited numbers of jobs. There is no loyalty to the employer or the employee because you are easily replaced for less money.

We innovate new technologies, but not like we used to, and what we do create, we build it out of country, because it is cheaper.

Who is going to fix all of these college graduate's cars, lights, etc? The blue collar worker is looked down upon as some schmuck who couldn't cut it in college.

Now we have a glut of college educated people who see any job that does not involve an air conditioned office as beneith them, a limited number of people aside from illegals that are willing to do the dirty work.

This can't lead to anywhere but disaster

Turning back to the hurricane....

Personally, I keep two large rubbermaid containers. In those containers is everything that could not be replaced for any amount of money - photos, heirlooms, etc.

Everything else is insured - that is why I pay for insurance.
That is why I have a generator, empty gallon containers to fill with water, extra propane cylinders, etc. That is why I board up the house, That is why when the government says "evacuate" I leave ASAP.
