Did anyone read the article in Car and Driver about the gentleman and his wife that road out Katrina in their Mississippi house that was 60 or 90 yards from the coast? It was well written and I found it very interesting. But, he was lamenting about loosing some valuable memorabilia. I just couldn't get over the fact that this monster storm was bearing down on him and he didn't have the sense to pack up some of these smaller items he was whining about losing.
He also was whining about loosing some furniture and such as well. My God, he made it out alive...why was he worried about losing material goods? How spoiled is this person? I do not know him or of him, so my assessment might be wrong. I have not been through a hurricane, but these sure seem to me to be very serious weather events that need respect. I do give this writer credit for having batteries, food and water ready to go to live on for days. I do wish him well though as he deals with that disaster.
We do not have such storms in my area, but have plenty of tornados. I take every warning seriously and have my unreplaceable items in waterproof and fire proof safes in the basement along with the necessary battery powered equipment ready to go. We watch the weather carefully when this type of weather threatens and aren't afraid to seek shelter immediately. Tornados happen within minutes and my family is ready to react quickly should one threaten. There probably are many people that do not have the means to help themselves, but it also seems to me that some of these more able people within the hurricane's path have days to react...
