I saw on one of the cops shows where a cop asked similar questions to a guy on a traffic stop. When the driver didn't acknowledge the strange question they got suspicious. Turns out the car was loaded with dope and they guy was more worried about that than listening to what was asked. So I think there is a point to throwing in a strange question.
