The issue is blow back. Brass is soft and while the chamber is under high pressure it locks to the walls of the chamber. Aluminum and steel do not seal as well. They can also scratch the steel breech.
If you have a locked breech design (SIG's are) you may have some blowback and cause you to clean more often. If you have a blowback design pistol, the design relys on the brass expanding and delaying the slide moving rearward. My early colts should never use steel or aluminium case ammo.
