I saw some shooting stars, but that seems too bright and short (distance across the skyies) to be one, especially on a 3 minute exposure....

1 The sun rotates, so if you take a long exposure of the sky at night the stars turn into streaks. Especially cool if you shoot due north.
I assume you are working with a digital SLR camera. If so then the larger dots that you were seeing are dust on your sensor.
