I would think one of the identification marks on the pumpkin would ID it as a posi. Absolute ID would be to remove the rear cover (messy, except that you get to change the fluid), and if there are more than a ring and pinion in there, it's a posi. The oil that goes back in might be different if it is. GM service rep (if you happen to get a helpful one) would probably tell you both things to look for.
