A verbal contract will be difficult for you to prove; if you were that serious about the car, you should have taken a few minutes and written a simple contract that the both of you signed. You'd then have some excellent evidence if you went to small claims court.
If I were you, in your current circumstance, I'd just look at it as a lesson learned and move on.
