If you suddenly had no mortgage payment you could easily use the money you used to spend on that for taxes and upkeep. It would only be a problem if your house was already paid off and you were still not making it.

(Disclaimer: All this is assuming that they basically pay off the old house and then build a new one. If this is not true, disregard)
