If you have a GSM cell phone and are taking it, make sure you contact your local carrier and make sure that international service is enabled.
Also, once there go to the bookstore in the hotel or find one outside. Ask for a calling card for America. This way you call a local number and like a phone card here, punch in a PIN and call home for 3-4c a minute, not the $3-5.00 a minute that the hotels charge. Check your cell phone rate as well if you are going to take one.
