Grady was right. I took a FAX of the title and bill of sale along with proof of insurance into the Boulder County DMV and they gave me a 60 day registration, even though they said they wouldn't over the phone.
They went ahead and charged the taxes though, which is probably what made them so eager to do it.
Anyhow, thanks for the help from everyone. Tomorrow I get to do the fascinating drive across west Kansas once more. But it'll be worth it!
