To get through the coming crisis, some future president is going to have to utter the "N" word, "Nuclear". There is an interesting article in the current issue of Scientific American about new nuclear technologies that will enable us to use over 99% of the fuel, and the waste will have a half-life of 100s of years instead 10,000s. With this technology, the fuel supply will last "indefinately", as the article says. I wish they would have defined "indefinately", but it will be 1000s of years, anyway.
Nuclear power plants can produce hydrogen for our cars, too. The optimist in me sees large oil companies taking over this technology smoothly, so they can make huge profits while preserving our economy so that they will have customers. I wonder how fast my 911E will go on hydrogen.
I've also heard experts predict that China will bypas the oil economy and go right into the nuclear/hydrogen economy. They probably won't have a choice.
If I were advising the Graduate, Benjamin, today, I'd say, "One word son, Nuclear."
