I bought my 911 from a guy in New Hampshire and was planning on putting my plates from Colorado on it to drive it home. I think it would have not been a problem. It turns out the PO gave me his plates for the drive and I promptly returned them after I got home. The ignition went out on the drive home and we had to push start it everywhere. When we pulled in for gas and left the car running and filled it up we got a lot of strange looks. Watch out for the "man" when you are entering Colorado. They were hidding everywhere!!
Good Luck!
