Breaking with orthodoxy is the foremost sin on the Left. They don't simply punish dissent -- they never forget or forgive it. We can go back to Jean-Paul Marat’s reign of vengeance during the French Revolution, to Stalin and the luckless Trotsky. Of course Orwell got it most memorably right with his pigs in Animal Farm. Or for a more contemporary and less figurative case study read David Horowitz’s “Radical Son,” the story of his long and deliberate break with the Left. Horowitz was the son of American communists from the Sunnyside section of Queens and came to lead the “New Left” during the 60s, even wrote the first student protest book during the Vietnam era, and his realization of the folly and destructiiveness of Leftism subjected him to a vindictive and sustained barrage of personal attacks. I recommend Mr. Horowitz in any case. He is an intellectual and gentleman and a real light for conservatism. His Center for the Study of Popular Culture in LA is a great resource.
