Sounds like you're working on an old cantankerous PC, can be much like working on an old Porsche. What version of Windows do you have?

It could be any one of a huge number of things, but it sounds like you've gotten spyware or a virus or part of the browser or OS has gotten damaged. Unfortunately with an old OS you are more susceptible to those things than with XP. Can you get a screen capture of the error when it pops up?
