Walter Williams, guest hosting for Rush answered the best I've ever heard to that question. A woman caller asked what he was getting his wife. He responded that he looks around the home, then tries to seek out a need that needs filling. For instance, his wife has heart trouble. Her doctor suggested no heavy lifting. So, showing the tenderness and concern he always shows, he bought her a child sized snow shovel, so the scoops of snow wouldn't weigh too much when she shovels the driveway and walk.
