I recently rode the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Northern Japan and back. Very nice, smooth, and fast ride. The track joints are welded and they have tunnelled through all mountains. I estimate we were going ~ 160mph and went through tunnels that took 3-4 minutes to get through. Beverage and food service onboard, trains are spotless, a very nice alternative to flying. The U.S. will never get something this nice working, well at least not in our lifetime.
