Enjoyable thread!
I too bought a Porsche while a college student. I had undergraduate degrees and working toward my MBA. I ordered from Porsche KG a new ’68 911 for $6,804.35. I regret that Pelican wasn’t in existence.
The advice you are getting above is right on target.
The first issue is not the engine but the condition of the car. If the car is a good example, no rust or crash damage, appropriate good interior and generally unmolested or well documented – you have a “find” at that price.
Yes, there is an issue with the engine. When these cars were new we recognized the limitations. They need better cooling – engine fans and front oil coolers. Given that; they match any 3.0 and later. There is also the advantage of light weight where it in needed most.
This is sort of a “forgotten generation” of Porsches. There is very little difference between a ’74 and an ’89 that can’t be up-dated. While the earlier cars are less expensive, they are lighter weight also.
One of the most remarkable things about our 911s is the ability to update and back date. Welcome to the Forum and continued Porsche enjoyment.
Best,
Grady
