I'm not an engineer, but I agree re the possibility that it's dust - or a mix of duut & smoke. The ehat would push it out (expanding pressure from heating the air, PV = nrT) just as Isl. says.
More tothe point, I'm glad you're ok, and that car is not too badly damaged. The pics make it expecially helpful & instructive to us all.
