Generally speaking, you're either interested in the content or you're not. If you are and you find it's loading too slowly, open another window and let it load in the background while you're doing/reading other stuff.
Either way, it's not like if you click on the thread you're stuck waiting for it to finish loading before you can back out of it. Just hit the back button.
