Lots of possible reasons:
* Reduce overall weight (downsize from the huge battery or multiple batteries)
* Make room up front for additional oil cooling in the fenders
* Reduce polar moment by moving weight towards the center of the car -- makes the car turn quicker
* Bling?
Possible downsides (as you mentioned):
* Weight is moved higher (minor amount of weight and minor height diff)
* The COG is shifted rearward because of the potentially significant reduction of weight up front
* Less cranking power or battery reserves (on a track car, who cares, on a street car this could be an issue)
