(BTW, I apologize for the jab on the other thread--it was more about mincing Supe's words than going after any of the people listed.)
That's why I'm glad to see it looks like the Patriot Act is going to be significantly modified before being renewed. I actually wish that most laws had an expiration date on them, so that the kind of debate that is taking place on that law would happen other places. It's kind of a forced evaluation of how effective a law really is, rather than all of the extreme predictions both sides of an issue always seem to turn out before a law is even passed. It would always take up Congress's time and prevent them from passing more stupid laws.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Patriot Act was a good first cut at creating tools to stop terrorists, but it needs constant monitoring and adjustment to keep the balance between security and liberty.
