I never said they should be taken away (you assumed that). I'm merely pointing out the hyperbole in your original post...
As far as deciding...that's what laws are for. We have determined lots of things are "stupid/dangerous/questionable". Kids cannot stand up for themselves. And sometimes parents are too lazy/stupid/messed up to do the best thing for their child.
Is it ok to hit a kid? How many times before it becomes child abuse? Is it ok to use drugs in front of them? Is it ok to smoke around them? Is it ok to curse? How about raising them as satanists? White supremecists?
All questions that could be on the table...
