I haven't heard of any cleaner way to remove them other than a spot weld drill bit and patience. Don't be surprised if you go through more than one bit.
Sure, you
could be impatient (like a fellow I once knew) and frustrate-chisel the hell out of 'em, but the extensive metal clean-up afterwards just ain't worth it.
