No, actually the airbed mfgs recommend a "foundation" instead of a box spring. The foundation is just a wood framed box with fabric stretched over it to look like the mattress and it serves to raise the mattres to the proper height from the floor. We used two twin foundations, then put a king-size air mattress (Comfortaire Cerulean) on top and we've been very happy with it.

Box springs wear out eventually and a foundation doesn't have any springs to flatten...
