The boyfriend doesn't have a self esteem issue, but he does feel very stupid about the tattoo. The way he acted of not reacting was very clever as it made Bobbi feel worse afterwards, they do have very strong feelings for each other, but she has very strong negative feelings about him and the tattoo. In truth I have never been so optimistic about things between them working out.
There is no getting away from the reality that my daughter has issues. I don't want to go into the background to it on a public forum but it very easy to understand and forgive her behaviour when it's known. Her boyfriend knows all about it, she is not usually like this with him.
Postscriptum
Janus just saw the last part of your post. Bobbi is not violent or abusive, just very angry. Yes I do think she is overreacting! If this was a regular occurrence her boyfriend would act. Because of his martial arts experience he spent most of his military service (used to be compulsory in Italy) as an unarmed combat instructor. He's a young lawyer but he's not a delicate little flower. My daughter's problems show up in presenting a very aggresive pose to the world, in appearance and attitude. If she was violent there would be good reason to be scared, she is very strong and athletic, an accomplished martial artist and, like me, has a carry permit for her pistol.
