I'm certain I saw a discussion on this forum where the process was described and included pictures. Use the search function to dig it up. As I recall, it is a lot of work and included lots of adhesives. The quote you got was probably reasonable.
My '88 cab top is in excellant shape except for the top window seals. They are a little ragged. I'm thinking that some sort of rubberized coating could be applied but haven't looked for a source yet.
