We tried during the summer with our daughter who was a about 2 and half at the time and it didn't work after a couple of days. She would pee on the toilet, if you set her down at the right time, but still had accidents. We decided to stop trying and went back to diapers.
Fast forward to this Christmas, we had a 3 hour flight to VA to see my family, so we didn't want to risk having an accident airborne. We talked about getting "big girl underpants" for a while, and the day we got back from Christmas (the 30th of December) she came in and said she wanted "Dora" big girl panties and wanted to use the potty. I went out and got a bunch of them, and she only had 2 accidents the first week. Once at night and once during the day. She has even gotten the hang of number 2 on the potty by now as well.
Its great! I hated changed poop diapers as she got older. I don't care what anyone says, when they are younger the poopy is not like an adults, once she started eating normal food, it smelled horrible.
My wife did pack a couple of small bags with changes of clothes that we put in each car just in case we have an accident though.
My wife is currently pregnant with our 2nd, and we had the ultrasound today (she's 21 weeks along) and we decided to find out the sex. Looks like my daughter will have a little brother in May, so I am excited.
