Cashflyer is right. The MAK 90 is the closest cheap thing out there. You can find them for around $300 and the old Soviet or Chinese surplus ammo is dirt cheap. They are fun guns.

If you want a Russian-made, semi-auto AK-47, they are a bit more expensive. They have much higher-quality wood stocks. There are plenty of Romanian, Chinese, Yugoslav and even Egyptian versions out there for less money and lower quality wood. If you just want a shooter, but a cheapo. There are plenty of aftermarket stocks you can put on them. If you buy a cheap Chinese SKS, get 50 rd. clips and put on a folding stock, it's basically the same gun as a semi-auto AK-47. You can get all that for under $300. There's a guy on SIGforum now selling parts to build these and it's even cheaper.

Around here, it'd be tough to shoot one of those since most indoor ranges won't allow rifles. But the NRA range, right by my house, does allow them, so I see a lot of them there. I shoot there about once a week and don't think I've been there once when there weren't at least two M4's, AR's or AK's at any given time.

BTW, these types of guns are used in less than 1% of all gun-related crimes. A cop literally has a better chance of being attacked by an escaped animal from the local zoo than coming across one of these. The so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" only banned some guns based on they way they look, not how they fire. Last time I checked, no one in had been killed by a bayonet, folding stock or flasg suppressor, which this law banned.
