You've got the right idea, using a pair of sockets and a vise or sturdy C-clamp, drive the cross all the way out one side, remove that bearing cup, then use a slightly smaller socket on the greasy stub and flip the whole operation around to drive the other cup out.

Once you get the first bearing cup off, it'll be clear how to procede.
